AMWC Battlelab hosts scientific board

MCGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. (USTCNS) -- As part of an ongoing effort to improve battle labs across the Air Force, the Air Mobility Warfare Center's Air Mobility Battlelab hosted a visit by the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board April 7.

"The SAB was charged by the Air Force Chief of Staff to evaluate battle labs across the Air Force," said Col. Dennis Sheraden, the AMBL's director. "We've been instrumental in bringing many improvements to the warfighter, and that's what we showed them."

Some of the innovations the AMBL has pioneered include mounting a plexiglas bubble on C-17 Globemasters to assist in surface-to-air missile detection, and installing night vision goggle-friendly lighting in C-130s.

"Day in and day out, the folks in the field accomplishing the mobility mission know best what the obstacles are," said Sheraden. "Unfortunately, they may not have the time or resources available to step back, call time-out, and fix the problem, because the next contingency is right around the corner. Until now, there hasn't been a simple and rapid means for them to up-channel their ideas or overcome those hurdles. The Air Mobility Battlelab provides the advocacy and agility to work some of those issues."

The SAB, which is an eight-member panel of civilians and retired general officers with extensive operational, technical, and research and development expertise, was charged by the Air Force chief of staff to evaluate the performance effectiveness, processes and organizational structure of battle labs across the Air Force.

"The CSAF-directed visit by the SAB was a significant milestone for the Air Mobility Battlelab," said Maj. Gen. Si Johnson, AMWC commander. "Pending the results of their recommendations, the AMBL is poised to expand its mission of providing practical innovation for Air Mobility Command, the Air Force and the Defense Transportation System."
