CHUK SA MET/SONGKHLA, Thailand (USTCNS) --- Military Sealift Command, Far East Naval Reservists are in Southern Thailand conducting shipping support operations for the upcoming Cobra Gold 2000 exercise.
Two teams from Military Sealift Command West Pacific 119, of the Navy/Marine Corps Reserve Center, Moreno Valley, Calif., have set up operations and are operating as Military Sealift Command Office Thailand and Military Sealift Command Office Detachment Songkhla.
Exercise Cobra Gold 2000 is a regularly scheduled joint-combined exercise involving forces from the United States, Thailand and Singapore.
Approximately 13,000 U. S. Forces will participate in the 19th Cobra Gold Exercise.
Cobra Gold 2000 officially begins May 9 and will last until May 23.
Upon reporting for duty here, the two teams each received and setup a Mobile Sealift Operation Center and began establishing communications with ships' agents and masters for the four MSC chartered ships MV Maersk Constellation, MV National Honor, MV Alam Tegas and MV Suphan Navee to coordinate ship movements, cargo, port operations and ship husbanding.
"The MSOC is a self contained, self sufficient expeditionary, command and control office able to perform its mission in remote areas without readily available electrical, telephone services," said Lt. Cmdr. Kevin McKeag, officer in charge MSCO Thailand.
"This is a very important because of some of the more remote locations that MSCFE is required to operate," McKeag continued.
Both reserve teams trained in complete setup of computers, INMARSET, generator, secure FAX, secure and unsecured communications and VHF/UHF/HF radio systems.
The Cobra Gold 2000 shipping schedule included the MV Maersk Constellation carrying U. S. Army equipment from Fort Lewis, Wash., Alaska and Hawaii; Hong Kong flagged MV National Honor U.S. Marine Corps equipment from Okinawa; and Malaysian flagged MV Alam Tegas Marine Corps equipment from Iwakuni and Okinawa, Japan.
Different from other recent Cobra Gold exercises, two ports are being used to move cargo for exercising forces. The two Thai ports were established allowing the use of large deep draft ships to bring large loads and smaller ships are utilized for the shorter trips. The Thai flagged MV Supan Navee is utilized to shuttle cargoes between the two ports.
The ships followed one after the other into Chuk Sa Met to discharge cargoes. Each team serves as boarding officers, liaison between ship agents and the other U. S. Forces moving the cargo inland or staging for further shipment to Songkhla.
Military Sealift Command delivers 95 per cent of exercise fuels, large weapons, food, ammunition, vehicles and housekeeping equipment.
Other reservists will travel to these two ports to conduct backload operations at exercise end. (FROM MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND - FAR EAST PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
