Scott-St. Louis NDTA Celebrates National Transportation Week, May 14 - 20

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- The Scott - St. Louis chapter of the National Defense Transportation Association celebrates National Transportation Week May 14-20 with events scheduled at several local venues.

This year's theme is "Transportation in the Heartland." President John F. Kennedy in 1962 declared NT week as the week in May with the third Friday of the month. That third Friday is National Defense Transportation Day.

The Scott-St. Louis NDTA, Chapter 82, is celebrating this year's NT Week with a golf tournament, luncheon, and scholarship awards dinner.

The chapter will begin NT Week with an NDTA Scholarship Golf Tournament on May 12 at the Orchards Golf Club, Belleville, IL. The format is a 4-some scramble. The tournament offers prizes.

The NT Week Luncheon will be held at the Scott Air Force Base Club on May 16 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Cost for the luncheon is $5 per person, which includes a prime rib dinner.

Charles White, associate administrator for policy and plans development at the Federal Railroad Administration is the scheduled guest speaker.

White develops railroad policy for the United States and helps to promote U.S. railroad industry participation in other nations' developing railroad networks.

The premier event of the week is the annual Scholarship Awards Dinner, which this year will be held at Cahokia Mounds, IL, on May 18, beginning at 6:15 p.m.

The host this year is Army Lt. Gen. Daniel Brown, deputy commander-in-chief, U.S. Transportation Command.

The Scholarship Awards Dinner will include a tour of the Cahokia Mounds museum and presentation of their video. Dinner begins at 7:00 p.m. The menu includes salad, rolls, sugar snap peas, baby carrots, chicken champagne, carved roast beef, cod, and desserts.

Brown will present the scholarship awards following the dinner.

The keynote speaker at the dinner is Richard Owings from the Museum of Transportation, St. Louis, MO, who will present the "History of Transportation in the St. Louis area." He will also present a slide show.

The U.S. Air Force Band of Mid America will provide music for the evening. Cost for the dinner is $20.00 per person.

Reservations are required for all events. For the NT Week Dinner, contact Leslie Heilig at (618) 256-2403 and for the Scholarship Awards Dinner, contact Ms. Lori Jones, (618) 256-6710.
