MTMC begins move to new location in Alexandria, Va.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (USTCNS) --- The move of the Military Traffic Management Command to a new location in Alexandria, Va., has begun.

The first offices of the command began physically relocating to the Hoffman II Building, 200 Stovall St., on Friday, May 5.

A series of incremental moves will take place until the bulk of the Army headquarters is relocated by mid-June.

"It truly is an historic day," said Bob Hardiman, move coordinator.

"We have spent many, many weeks and months making sure this move is efficient and tied to our customers and computer software applications.

"We are succeeding."

MTMC has been a landmark at the Nassif Building, 5611 Columbia Pike, in Falls Church, Va., for the past 35 years.

For many employees, it has been their work place home for years and years.

"This is the only building I have ever worked in," said Leon Parrish, president of the local bargaining unit of American Federation of Government Employees.

Relocated organizations on Friday include MTMC's contracting, inspector general, legal, equal opportunity, internal review and some information management sections.

"We have had a great move," said Ana Colon, equal opportunity officer. "It has been smooth."

Lt. Col. Dorothy Johnson, inspector general agreed.

"We have had a great day," said Johnson. "It has all come together."

Movement to the Hoffman II Building, adjacent to the Telegraph Road interchange if I-495 means a savings for the Department of Defense: It is one less privately owned building housing Department of Defense employees.

Since the spring of 1965, the Military Traffic Management Command has been a familiar presence in the Nassif Building, 5611 Columbia Pike, Falls Church, Va.

MTMC employees are moving into totally renovated workspaces that are equipped with new computer systems furniture.

In all, the new building will have 800 computer stations for the command's military and civilian work force, said Hardiman. There will be an additional 375 workstations for contractor personnel.

MTMC's offices will take up all of the 10-12th floors -- and parts of the 8th floor and 9th floors. The command will have a total of 165,000-square feet of space in Hoffman II -- a 10 percent increase in existing space in the Nassif Building.

The added space will allow headquarters employees now in the Webb Building, 4040 N. Fairfax Drive, Arlington, Va., to centralize in the new building by this Labor Day.

The new building will have numerous improved features such as air quality and parking.

In addition, MTMC will now be located on the METRO system -- the Eisenhower Station on the Yellow Line.

Most employees are looking forward to the move, said Hardiman.

"I think all employees understand this is a very positive undertaking," said Hardiman. "For some employees, there will be a better commute. Of course, for others it will be a longer distance, but the same or shorter commute time."

The move also allows the command to support the Clean Air Act by providing a monthly commuter subsidy for those who use public transportation.

A relocation group composed of management, employees and union members has worked for over a year to prepare MTMC workers for the move. The group, made up of representatives of each headquarters office, assists in planning the move's communications and technical work.

"We have had good participation and overcome numerous issues," said Hardiman.

The move program manager is Bernard Walls who is assisted by contractors Harvey Fielding and Neill Wait.

"We have had a lot of success with the concept," said Fielding. "When an issue comes up, we discuss it at length and get an answer communicated quickly.

"The group has been invaluable in quickly providing the great host of detailed information required to make the move a success."

"In all, the command is acquiring 1,175 work stations," said Wait. "There are four basic sizes: 46-square feet, 59-square feet, 77-square feet and 128-square feet.

"What station an employee gets is based on their grade level. The most common work station is the 59-square foot station -- 600 of them are being purchased."

MTMC will share the Hoffman II Building with several other organizations. The largest of these is the U.S. Total Army Personnel Command.

Hardiman says he will remain focused in the next six weeks on computer connectivity.

"Success is when we are all in the Hoffman II Building and on line with all systems without interruption or adverse mission impact," said Hardiman.
