MTMC's top reservist assumes USTRANSCOM post

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (USTCNS) --- Brig. Gen. Carlos "Butch" Pair is about to change his life.

Pair, 51, MTMC's deputy commander for mobilization is selling his house in Sylacauga, Ala., and putting his civilian career on hold.

Beginning June 19, Pair returns to active duty.

Pair is the new chief of staff for U.S. Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

The 21-year U.S. Army Reserve officer has not been on active duty since 1979 at Redstone Arsenal, Ala.

"My wife, Jean, and I are both looking forward to this adventure and are ready to become part of the Scott Community," said Pair.
"I look forward to making the contribution necessary to support both the TRANSCOM vision and the day-to-day mission."

MTMC's top reservist was nominated by the U.S. Army Reserve Command for consideration for the position. The nomination is part of a Department of Defense initiative to place senior reservists in positions of high leadership.

Pair was personally selected for the U.S. Transportation Command position by Gen. Tony Robertson, commander, and Lt. Gen. Dan Brown, deputy commander, after a competitive interview process.

He will serve a two-year tour of duty.

Shortly after the appointment was made, Pair walked into a MTMC Headquarters staff meeting which erupted into spontaneous applause.

"This command is really all about great people," said Pair. "I love the people -- they do a great job."

Pair praised Maj. Gen. Kenneth L. Privratsky, commander, and Maj. Gen. Mario F. Montero, past commander, for providing him leadership opportunities.

"It has been a quick two years," said Pair. "One of the best things is they trusted me to do the things a Reserve Component officer wouldn't normally do."

As an example, Pair said he is currently working on virtual deployment as a training vehicle for MTMC. In developing the concept, Pair has coordinated with numerous organizations including MTMC's Transportation & Engineering Agency, U.S. Forces Command, Training & Doctrine Command and the Joint Forces Command.

"Some one else will finish the job," said Pair, "but we have gotten this stuff into the real architecture of the future for the transportation modules."

Pair says his new assignment will be challenging.

"My wife and I are making a total commitment," said Pair. "This is a seven-days-a-week job -- from 6 a.m. until you finish."

Pair was praised by Bill Lucas, assistant to the commander.

"You have been a heck of a spark plug," Lucas told Pair. "You have done things none of your predecessors have done."

Pair is a 1970 graduate of Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Ala., where he received an Army commission through the ROTC program.

Before his MTMC assignment, Pair was the chief of staff of the U.S. Army Reserve's 377th Theater Support Command, New Orleans.

MTMC's new deputy commander for mobilization will be Col. Lou Roach, former commander of the 1192nd Transportation Brigade, New Orleans.

Roach is a transportation officer employed with the federal government's San Dia Laboratory, in Albuquerque, N.M. (FROM MILITARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT COMMAND).
