TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (USTCNS) --- Blisters, sweat, cuts, exhaustion and bugs were only some of the obstacles the Readiness Challenge team conquered while competing against 15 other teams at the Silver Flag Site at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., April 29 to May 5.

Travis Air Force Base represented Air Mobility Command during Readiness Challenge VII, a premier biennial event that tests competitors' wartime skills.

Readiness Challenge typically consists of a number of events that showcase the skills of civil engineers, services personnel and members of the chaplain service. All events are designed to test competitors' leadership, teamwork and ingenuity.

Working tirelessly in each event earned the RC team 11 first-place awards, but a third-place finish overall.

"We couldn't have won so many awards without teamwork," said Capt. Dee Katzer, 60th Civil Engineer Squadron and team chief. "We knew that if we were consistent throughout the competition, we would be in the running for first place."

Chaplain Services began the RC team's winning streak. Master Sgt. Bruce Vanbibber, 60th Air Mobility Wing, and Chaplain (Capt.) James Glass, 60th Air Mobility Wing, won the Chaplain Robert P. Taylor Award in the Chaplain Service Category. The award is named after the third USAF Chief of Chaplains who served from 1962 to 1965, who spent 42 months as a POW and survived the Bataan Death March.

Keeping the winning streak going, Tech. Sgt. Tod Rosenberg, 60th Civil Engineer Squadron, received the Maj. Gen. George E. Ellis Outstanding Individual Participant award. The Ellis award honors the former director of engineering and services, who is renowned for his support of those individuals who "made a difference."

Staff Sgt. Scott Wisecarver, 60th Services Squadron, received the Chief Master Sgt. William E. Morrison Award for Outstanding Services Team Competitors. It's named for the first Services NCO to be promoted to chief. Chief Morrison is credited with making the Services mission a full-time player in the Air Force readiness program.

Other first place awards that the team won were: Service Combat Excellence award in the Prime Ribs category, Services Pallet Build-up and Forklift Course, Remains Processing, Team Obstacle Course, Chemical Munitions Response, Live Fire Operations, Ventilations and Fire Rescue Operations, and General Purpose Medium Tent Installation with Heater.

Although Readiness Challenge was a competition, the relevance to real-world situations is not lost on team members.

"All of the individuals on the team have a much keener understanding of readiness," Katzer said. "Many of the scenarios like Fog-of-War and Contingency Airfield Operations are geared toward real-world contingencies."

In addition to understanding what readiness is, team members had the chance to watch what other members of their team do in a real-world environment.

"This type of competition is good because in a real-world environment, someone in EOD wouldn't see what a services person or chaplain does," said Senior Airman Tobin Bryant, 60th Civil Engineer Squadron. "In an event like Fog-of-War, the team had to work together and find their priorities."

Overall, Katzer was pleased with the team's performance at Readiness Challenge.

"The team was outstanding," Katzer said. "They came together as a team and gave 150 percent." (FROM AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
