TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (USTCNS) --- The 60th Supply Squadron was awarded the Air Force Daedalian Award May 15.
The Maj. Gen. Warren R. Carter Supply Daedalian Award is presented annually to the best Air Force supply squadron, achieving the best supply effectiveness record in the Air Force in support of mission aircraft and weapons.
This marks the second time 60th SUPS has been selected for the national-level Daedalian Award. The squadron also won in 1969.
The Daedalian team toured supply squadron facilities in April, including Supply University, the flight line aircraft parts store, fuels facilities, the jet engine shop, mobility section and the 60th Air Mobility Wing 1999 Dormitory of the Year, which supply won.
"Daedalian-caliber squadrons are evaluated based on leadership and strategic planning, technology and automation, human resources management, statistical performance results and customer focus and satisfaction," said 1st Lt. Kristie Oxford, Daedalian project officer. "The visit gave us the opportunity to show what you can't see on paper, and that is simply the motivation and morale of all the troops and the huge responsibility we have at Travis supporting the C-5 and the strategic airlift mission."
The 60th SUPS, representing Air Mobility Command, was one of three squadrons competing for the award. Other competitors were Kadena Air Base, Japan, and Luke Air Force Base, Ariz.
"To be chosen as the best supply squadron in AMC is already a great honor," said Lt. Col. Edward Acevedo, 60th SUPS commander. "Receiving this award is simply phenomenal. We're the best supply squadron in the Air Force. I'm sure this is what a gold-medal Olympian must feel like ... the relentless drive to succeed, the anticipation of waiting for the judges' results and the rush of adrenaline upon hearing you have won."
More than 400 people, acting as one team, had to perform at their best for many months, said Acevedo.
"I knew all along [that the 60th SUPS] was the Air Force's best, and I'm thrilled to see the Air Staff Daedalian Team realized it as well," he added.
After reviewing the squadron's 1999 successes, it's no surprise they were named best of the best.
According to Acevedo, during 1999 the 60th SUPS handled the largest account in AMC, pumping 95 million gallons of fuel/cryogenics, deploying 35 MRSP kits and 124 supply and fuels troops for 5,924 days in support of 16 worldwide operations. It's what Acevedo called "strategic airlift at its best."
During 1999, the 60th SUPS processed more than 5,800 base personnel, 2,864 bags and 1,440 weapons with zero shortfalls and all chalks on time. The squadron also ensured accountability of $500,000 in mobility assets.
The squadron was also recognized for aggressively heading into the next millennium through modernization, squadron restructuring, reducing 44 billets and adding innovative technology while facing the largest retraining initiative in the supply career field.
In addition to successes in modernization, the squadron was also lauded for spending more than 300 labor hours in meticulous research and for writing memorandums of agreement for private industry contract of hazardous material and individual equipment. The effort saved the Air Force $3.5 million in stock fund.
The accolades don't stop there.
The squadron was cited for implementing a zero-cost, one-of-a-kind merger of the flight line demand processing section and the dedicated maintenance unit, which, according to Acevedo, dramatically improved supply and maintenance relations and aircraft mission support.
The squadron was also recognized for its "shrewd" management of $28 million total funding authority.
The 60th SUPS' mobility processing team was also spotlighted for its achievements regarding mobility asset shelf-life and chemical mask management of 200,000 items. Accuracy and serviceability was error free, according to the commander.
Although the list of supply squadron accomplishments is long, Acevedo said he realizes his squadron didn't win the Daedalian on its own. He said they had the help from the entire Travis Team. (FROM AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
