WASHINGTON (USTCNS) --- Two of the U.S. Navy's newest ships have arrived in Baltimore harbor with a $3.8 million berthing contract. USNS Fisher and USNS Seay, part of the Military Sealift Command, are expected to contribute millions to the local economy in maintenance, utilities, waste disposal, security and other civilian services. The initial berthing contract period is for three years with two one-year options.

Fisher and Seay are large, medium speed, roll-on/roll-off ships, or LMSRs. LMSRs have two missions - prepositioning and surge sealift. Prepositioning consists of preloaded LMSRs at sea in strategic locations around the globe. Surge sealift LMSRs are berthed empty and are loaded to transport military combat equipment during war and other contingencies.

Fisher and Seay are surge sealift LMSRs. With 387,662 square feet of cargo area, they are capable of carrying an entire U.S. Army armor or air assault battalion. The ships are layberthed in reduced operating status and can sail, with a full crew of 29 mariners each, on 96 hours notice. Both ships are operated by a civilian ship operating company under contract with the U.S. Navy.

Fisher and Seay join USNS Comfort, one of the Navy's two hospital ships, berthed in Baltimore since 1987. The three ships comprise a significant Military Sealift Command presence in Baltimore harbor.

MSC is the ocean transportation provider for the Department of Defense. In addition to prepositioning and sealift, MSC provides combat logistics services for Navy ships at sea and supports special mission ships for various U.S. government agencies. (FROM MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
