SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) -- Gen. Charles "Tony" Robertson likes to talk about recent improvements in the Defense Transportation system.

The warfighter commander-in-chief, or CINC for short, of US. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) says the Army, Navy and Air Force components of his organization are doing superbly.

From Scott Air Force Base, Ill., USTRANSCOM has oversight of the Military Traffic Management Command, Military Sealift Command and the Air Mobility Command.

"USTRANSCOM and the Defense Transportation System are the great enabler for the warfighting CINC," said Robertson, commander since August 1998. In the position, Robertson has double duty, also serving as commander of the Air Mobility Command.

Military warfighter and governmental humanitarian missions absolutely rely on USTRANSCOM, said Robertson.

"They know there is no one else that can do the job if it is a global challenge. With our industry partners there is a synergy -- and also some good ideas."

In an interview with "Translog" on July 5, Robertson singled out the work of the Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC).

"MTMC is leveraging its operations and centralizing its core processes," said Robertson. "The command has invested in information technology to improve productivity.

"The command is moving to leanness in the budget process for savings."

Efficient operations are a goal of the entire USTRANSCOM organization, he added.

"We are all doing it. MTMC is just in the lead. It impacts in customer service for all of us in USTRANSCOM. MTMC is just in the first for the good of the customers."

Major goals, said Robertson, are better customer service, lower freight rates and additional support to the warfighters.

A big step in the future for USTRANSCOM is a supply chain management initiative with the Defense Logistics Agency.

"It will put USTRANSCOM into transportation and logistics," said Robertson. "I am extremely optimistic."

Robertson said he sees two big trends affecting USTRANSCOM's operations:
* A large increase in humanitarian operations, and
* A more efficient Defense Transportation System.

"There is a trend in operations," said Robertson, from warfighting oriented. The warfighting aspects of what we do have calmed down. Now, humanitarian missions are one of our most critical."

These USTRANSCOM humanitarian missions include relief for such natural calamities as hurricanes and earthquakes.

"We have turned toward the constructive side versus what I refer to as the destructive side," said Robertson. "As the world changes, the constructive side offers more low-hanging fruit than the destructive side."

Robertson called the Defense Transportation System the "best the world has known."

"We have a more efficient and more effective Defense Transportation System," said Robertson.

"We have to improve training, equipment and infrastructure, in-transit visibility and processes."

Great improvements have been made in modernization and USTRANSCOM operations, he said.

"Sealift is better than ever," said Robertson. "Our surface partnership is better than ever."

Robertson praised the workers in the Defense Transportation System- whether in the field or in office cubicles in headquarters buildings.

"Heroic work is being done," said Robertson. "We really are making a difference-we really are making a difference in the world."

Robertson is a 1968 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. In his 29-year career, Robertson has commanded at squadron, wing and numbered air force levels. In his career, he has flown over 4,000 flight hours in over a dozen different type of aircraft. (FROM MILITARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
