SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- On October 1st, 2000 Military Sealift Command celebrates its 51st anniversary. As it sails full steam ahead into its second half-century of service, the men and women of MSC can take great pride in the many accomplishments of their command.
America's ability to accomplish its vast and complex global military mission is critically dependent on MSC's capability to ship our armed forces over the seas and, once those forces are engaged, to sustain them -- any time, for as long as necessary.
This year also begins the Department of Defense's commemoration activities for the 50th anniversary of the Korean War. The Military Sea Transportation Service, as MSC was known at the time, demonstrated the immense power that our nation's sealift fleet brings to the fight.
MSTS used a fleet of commercially chartered vessels, Navy-manned and civil-service manned cargo and transport ships, and oil tankers from the military petroleum supply agency to sustain America's fighting power throughout the war. During the course of the Korean War, the MSTS moved more than 52 million tons of cargo; 21 million tons of petroleum; and almost 5 million passengers to support the war effort.
From the Korean War until this very day, MSC's partnership with civilian industry and management of Navy-owned and chartered vessels remains world-renowned. The great men and women serving MSC offer skill and acumen in coordinating and leading in this cooperative effort that is the envy of the military maritime world.
I am extremely proud that you are part of the United States Transportation Command family. Happy anniversary MSC!
