TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (USTCNS) --- Twelve healthcare providers from David Grant Medical Center returned to Travis Air Force Base, Calif., Aug. 26 after providing needed health care to the people in remote areas of Peru.

Their first stop was Santa Lucia, with a population of 1,400. After five days, they moved on to Tingo Maria, population of 120,000, for an additional six days.

"It is a tropical area and quite beautiful to see. The people are friendly despite their harsh living conditions," said Col. (Dr.) Larry Corman, pediatric flight commander at DGMC. "This was my fourth humanitarian mission. I went to Honduras twice, and this was my second mission to Peru."

The team consisted of nine healthcare providers - seven of whom were doctors from family practice, pediatrics and medicine - and two oral surgeons. A pharmacy technician, a medical technician and a nurse rounded out the team.

"We offered acute care to local people, many of whom worked in the fields, who could not otherwise afford health care," explained Corman.

By working side by side with Peruvian doctors and dentists, using translators, the team was able to treat 4,143 people in Santa Lucia and an additional 5,057 at Tingo Maria for a total of 9,200 patients treated.

Four people on the team spoke fluent Spanish, including Lt. Maria Yamzon, a nurse who was born in Columbia. According to team members, the lieutenant proved to be a real asset when communicating with the Peruvian officials and patients.

"The training in an austere environment made this deployment a learning experience for all the team members. We worked out of a school at each location. We traveled to the cities via a C-27 provided by the [U.S. State Department], and then by truck or bus to each site. Breakfast and dinner were provided at our lodging, and we ate MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) for lunch," Corman said.

"You see such stark contrasts with the patients. Many of them are relatively healthy with chronic respiratory symptoms and aches and pains from their harsh environment and working conditions," said Corman. "I think that we were able to offer them at least some temporary relief." (FROM AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
