FORT EUSTIS, Va. (USTCNS) --- Sometimes misfortunate situations can become treasured memories as was the case recently for the 833d Transportation Battalion, Seattle, Wash.
The Military Sealift Command's USNS Red Cloud became the first large medium speed roll-on/roll-off ship to dock at Naval Magazine Indian Island, Port Hadlock, WA.
The ship's presence provided an excellent training opportunity for Deployment Support Command staff as well as a number of Navy Reservists at Port Hadlock.
Sailing from Charleston, S.C., with equipment and containers enroute to the Indian Ocean, the vessel developed a mechanical problem. This delay caused the unscheduled temporary discharge of the containers at Indian Island on before heading to Portland, Ore., for repairs.
"This represented the first time ever that an LMSR vessel has docked anywhere in the Pacific Northwest," said Richard Carlyle, chief of operations for the 833d Transportation Battalion headquartered in Seattle, Wash. "It also opened the door for some excellent training," Carlyle added.
Fortune favored the prepared when it was time to unload the containers. Jerry Gooch, a marine cargo specialist with the 833rd, had recently returned from an LMSR training course developed by the DSC's 841st Transportation Battalion, headquartered in North Charleston, N.C. This course familiarized him with the vessel and provided beneficial technical insight in handling the discharge.
"Jerry did an excellent job of working the discharge at Indian Island and coordinating with the 841st," said John Manahane, another 833rd marine cargo specialist who also attended the LMSR training. "The 841st oversees the Army's Preposition Stocks-3 Afloat program."
When Red Cloud's repairs were completed, it returned to Indian Island to pick up the containers it had previously left behind. When it tied up for the second time, Manahane and Craig Messervy, a marine cargo specialist with the 841st, worked together to ensure a safe upload and an accurate stow plan.
Messervy's knowledge of the Army's prepositioning program coupled with Mahahane's expertise in creating extremely accurate stow plans was responsible for accomplishing the upload without delay.
"The help we received from the reservists was outstanding," Messervy said of the Navy reservists who provided invaluable support in the cargo operation.
Army Lt. Col. Carol Butts, commander of the 833rd, had extensive experience with the Army's Prepositioning Stocks-3 Afloat program and voiced her delight that some of her staff had the opportunity to work and train on the new version of the LSMR.
"This was an excellent training opportunity," Butts said. "And for all of us in MTMC, that is vital." (FROM MILITARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT COMMAND - DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS
