SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- On October 13, our U.S. Navy celebrates its 225th birthday...a magnificent organization with a history which traces its origins and accomplishments back to the Continental Navy, established during the war of independence. Since 1775, the great men and women of our U.S. Navy have woven a rich record of service to our nation --- and established our Navy as the world's premier maritime force.

This year also marks the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of America's entry into the Korean War. As is the case for every major war effort, our Navy played a critical role in insuring our nation's victory in Korea. And as in every war this country has fought, before or since, we could not have prevailed without them.

From the initial stages of the Korean war, our Navy was fully engaged. Navy destroyers covered the evacuation of Americans from Seoul following the initial invasion by the North Koreans; Navy warships provided coastal fires to stymie the attacking North Koreans; and Navy minesweepers cleared thickly mined harbors in Korea's coastal waters.

The Military Sea Transportation Service (later named the Military Sealift Command) carried millions of tons of ammunition, cargo, and fuel throughout the conflict, in addition to delivering thousands of troops to the front. Clearly, the diverse and difficult missions of our Navy throughout the Korean War were critical to our success in pushing the North Koreans back across the 38th parallel--and securing the freedom of our South Korean allies.

The sailors of USTRANSCOM and MSC represent the very best the world has to offer...with the same courage and commitment to freedom that their predecessors demonstrated during the Korean War. I am extremely proud of our Navy's many accomplishments throughout their history, as well as their tremendous contributions in support of the defense transportation system.

Members of our U.S. Navy should stand proud in their accomplishments, and be assured that each of us in U.S. Transportation Command look to them as the world's global maritime standard.
