ARLINGTON, Va. (USTCNS) --- Official travel for Department of Defense service members and civilians is going to get better very soon.

The Defense Travel System will begin a "real-time" operational assessment of the system with actual travelers Oct. 16 at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.

"We think we have a great product and look forward to confirming it at Whiteman," said Col. Pamela Arias, program director.

Developmental testing was successfully completed in September at the Joint Interoperability Test Command, Fort Huachuca, Ariz. A test review board with members from services, agencies and the program office scrutinized test results. They voted unanimously Oct. 5 to proceed with an operational assessment at the Air Force base.

"The lab test at Fort Huachuca was extremely successful and we're excited to move forward to the final test phase," said Arias. "It has been a real team effort among the Department of Defense and TRW, our prime contractor.

Operational testing at Whiteman Air Force Base will last several weeks and will be the final step before initial deployment scheduled for Dec. 18.

The Defense Travel System is a state-of-the-art fully automated travel process that travelers can complete from their desktop computers. The system eliminates the labor-intensive process for handling travel arrangements, requesting orders, booking tickets, and filing voucher claims.

"Not only will the process be easier for the traveler but the government will save time and money," said Arias.

Once travelers are accustomed to the system, she predicts, memories of processing paper vouchers will seem like a "Model T."

As the Defense Travel System takes shape the Project Management Office and TRW will provide frequent updates on the program's progress.

For additional information, travelers can access the Travel Systems World-Wide Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/travelink (FROM MILITARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
