USTRANSCOM's Navy element honors fallen comrades, commemorates 225th Navy birthday
The U.S. Navy element, including 148 Navy and U.S. Marine Corps sailors and Marines at USTRANSCOM, held a ceremony at USTRANSCOM's Transportation Plaza, led by Rear Adm. Edward Fahy, director of plans and policy.
Cdr. Lowell Crow and Petty Officer 1st Class John Modesto, both from USTRANSCOM's Navy element, laid a wreath in honor of the sailors killed in an attack on USS Cole Thursday.
Fahy said today's Navy birthday "is a day of sadness, a day of mourning, but also a day to celebrate, and to rededicate our lives to our purpose and our mission."
Fahy noted that while military members serve for a variety of reasons, "they do not do it for the money, nor for the glamour, not for praise or vain glory, all of which are in short supply in the hard, practical world of today's military."
According to Fahy, sailors dedicated to preserving society's value will remain indispensable to the nation.
"Someone must always have the watch, someone must always be the sentinel, and someone must climb the gangway, man their stations, and set sail into the morning sun," he said.
Fahy encouraged the more than 200 people attending the ceremony to "stand tall today, proud of our country, and our service, and our willingness to sacrifice so that others may live free, and with dignity."
