C-17 dedicated "The City of St. Louis"

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- Following the tradition of naming aircraft after communities that provide overwhelming support to its production process, the Air Force named its newest C-17 the "City of St. Louis."

The Oct. 10 dedication ceremony at Boeing facilities adjacent to Lambert Field Airport in St. Louis recognized the many contributions the city has made to its production.

The dedication of the C-17 also gave Air Mobility Command an opportunity to acknowledge not only the people of the St. Louis for their enthusiastic support but also the employees of the Boeing plant, which manufactures the aircraft, for all of their hard work.

Gen. Charles T. "Tony" Robertson, Jr., commander of U.S. Transportation Command and commander of AMC, presented C-17 "keys" to St. Louis' Mayor Clarence Harmon and to Jerry Kauffman, General Manager for C-17 and Commercial Support at the Boeing Company in St. Louis.

"In its short operational life, the C-17 has already demonstrated a set of operational capabilities unmatched in military aviation," said Robertson.

"From the frozen tundra of Antarctica, to the short, congested field in Tirana, Albania where it earned its combat spurs in the middle of the recent Kosovo conflict, the C-17 continues to perform missions that no other aircraft in the world can possibly perform," said Robertson. "And it not only performs them superbly, it performs them with unprecedented reliability."

"Although the C-17 is an Air Force airplane, it's really a national asset - all our military services and our allies depend on it in peacetime and war," said David Spong, president-select of military aerospace support for the Boeing Company.

Adding to Spong's sentiments, Jerry Daniels, president of military aircraft and missiles systems for the Boeing Company, said, "This particular C-17 has an extra dimension. When it goes out into the world, it will carry with it the pride of a city and a region whose history is filled with glorious aerospace accomplishments. What an honor it is for all of us that the Air Force has chosen St. Louis to join such illustrious C-17 names as the Wright Brothers, the Tuskegee Airmen and America's Veterans."
