AVONDALE, La. (USTCNS) --- A U.S. Navy strategic sealift ship was christened USNS Brittin in ceremonies at the Avondale shipyard Oct. 21.

The new ship is named in recognition of Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Nelson V. Brittin. Brittin received the Medal of Honor posthumously for conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action during the Korean War.

Marine Corps Gen. (Ret.) Terrence R. Dake, former assistant Marine Corps commandant, served as the principal speaker at the christening ceremony.

The ship's sponsors were Dorothy Brittin Moffa, sister of the ship's namesake, and Sue Dake, wife of Gen. Dake. The two women christened the ship with the traditional bottles of champagne in honor of Brittin.

"Avondale is proud to be christening another fine Navy ship, a ship produced by experienced ship designers, engineers and skilled craftsmen," said Thomas M. Kitchen, president, Litton Avondale Industries. Litton Avondale Industries built the ship and hosted the christening ceremony.

USNS Brittin can carry more than 1,000 military vehicles, along with containers and cargo, and has nearly 380,000 square feet of cargo space to provide prepositioning and surge sealift capacity to contingency areas worldwide.

"USNS Brittin will join MSC's surge sealift fleet when she delivers, ready on a moment's notice to carry U.S. Army supplies and equipment wherever and whenever needed," said Navy Vice Adm. Gordon S. Holder, the commander of Military Sealift Command, the Navy command which will operate USNS Brittin.

Military Sealift Command is the ocean transportation provider for the Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy component to U.S. Transportation Command.

Also attending the ceremony was Air Force Gen. Charles T. "Tony" Robertson, commander in chief of U.S. Transportation Command and commander of Air Mobility Command.

Military colors were provided by the 24th Infantry Division and Fort Riley, Kansas, Color Guard.

The Navy Band New Orleans performed the music for the ceremony.

Navy chaplain Lt. Cdr. Paul Nguyen delivered the invocation.

The 950-foot-long, large, medium-speed, roll-on/roll-off ship, or LMSR, is among the largest in the Navy fleet. Longer than three football fields, USNS Brittin has a beam of nearly 106 feet, a draft of 34 feet, 6 inches and displaces 62,069 long tons fully loaded. With 5,160-shaft-horsepower, the ship can cruise at speeds in excess of 24 knots with an endurance standard of12,000 nautical miles. The new ship will have a contract-mariner operating crew of 30 and accommodations for 95.

USNS Brittin is scheduled for delivery in early 2002.
