Marine Corps Anniversary --- November 10, 2000
As another proud chapter in our Marine Corps' history, events commemorating America's entry in the Korean War (1950-1953) also begin this year. As in all other American wars, before and since, our Marines were critical to the effort to turn back the enemies of freedom in Korea. Within weeks of the North Korean invasion, more than 6,500 Marines sailed from San Diego to Pusan. Shortly after going ashore, Marine aviators began harassing enemy positions. Ground forces, meanwhile, drove back a determined North Korean enemy to stabilize the Pusan perimeter.
Through the next three years, the 1st Marine division, along with the 1st Marine aircraft wing, added new legend to the rich lore of Marines in combat. Marines were the spearhead of an epic and bold attack at Inchon, far behind enemy lines, which enabled united nations troops to recapture Seoul - the capital of south Korea. Marines continued to distinguish themselves over the course of the war during the Chosin reservoir campaign, during fighting along the east-central front and later along the western front…and at all points in between. And lest we forget, more than 4,500 Marines gave their lives and more than 30,000 were wounded in the struggle. Remembering and honoring all who have gone before, our U.S. Marine Corps today proudly carries on the rich traditions and fighting spirit embodied by those Marines who fought on the Korean peninsula fifty years ago.
The men and women of USTRANSCOM are very proud of the record of dedication and single-minded adherence to a code of honor our Marines have so nobly achieved. Stand tall Marines. Celebrate this day. We thank you for your outstanding service. Semper Fi.
