436th Supply Squadron's Fuel Management Flight wins AMC's best fuels flight award

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (USTCNS) --- The 436th Supply Squadron's Fuel Management Flight won, for the second year in a row, the William M. Penton Award, given to the best fuels flight in Air Mobility Command.

This year's best in AMC competition was narrowed down to three possible fuels flights, Dover Air Force Base, McConnell AFB, Kan., and McGuire AFB, N.J.

"Dover's fuels flight did many things this year that helped them take home the award," said Tech. Sgt. Randolph T. Patterson, noncommissioned officer in charge of FMF's Resource Control Center.

The first thing Dover's fuels flight accomplished was maintaining the highest aircraft fuel response time in AMC.

"When the command post calls with a request for fuel on the flightline, fuels runs out there," said Patterson. "The AMC standard is 30 minutes, but we average a response time of 7 minutes."

The flight also maintained the highest accountability rate in AMC for the second year in a row.

"The fuels accounting department must input all fuels transactions in their computer systems for accountability purposes," said Patterson. "We had 100 percent accountability for every day of every month of every year for the last two years. The attention to detail on fuels accounting's part is second to none."

Besides having the highest accountability rate, the flight also had a 100 percent fuel delivery rate this year.

"The fuels flight must make sure aircraft are fueled and ready to go for their scheduled take-off time," said Patterson. "There were zero aircraft delays related to fuels this year."

After bases submit their yearly award packages telling about their accomplishments for the year, AMC headquarters selects the top flights. Then headquarters staff members do a three-day inspection of each of the top flights.

During the Penton Award inspections, AMC headquarters staff met with the members of the fuels flights and checked all the fueling equipment and facilities on each base.

"The Penton award is the only award given to flights throughout the Air Force," said 1st Lt. Jeffrey McGee, FMF commander. "All other best-of-the-best awards go to squadrons, groups, wings…"

The next level of competition for the Eagle Wing's Fuels flight will be for best fuels flight in the Air Force.

"We were finalists last year," said McGee. "This year we're going all the way and bringing it home for AMC and Dover Air Force Base!" (FROM DOVER AIR FORCE BASE PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
