ALEXANDRIA, Va. (USTCNS) --- Service members whose vehicles were damaged aboard M/V Faust are getting a break.

At no charge, affected individuals may ship a second privately owned vehicle courtesy of the contractor, American Auto Logistics, Inc., of Monroe, N.Y.

"We are pleased to offer this opportunity to the service members whose vehicles were lost," said Bill Antonelli, vice-president.

"American Auto Logistics realizes the inconvenience that the members have been faced with during this unfortunate situation and we are doing everything in our power to lessen the burden."

After unsuccessful efforts to clean diesel oil damage from 165 vehicles, the firm judged all cars totaled.

The damage occurred Nov. 5 when the Faust encountered a severe English Channel storm. A military vehicle broke loose and punctured a diesel oil tank. Ten tons of oil flowed out and contaminated service member vehicles on several lower decks.

The contractor is making the free shipping offer in a cooperative effort with American Roll-on Roll-off Carriers, of Montvale, N.J., the ship operator.

American Auto Logistics has exceeded contractual obligations repeatedly in order to assist service members who lost their vehicles. Assistance includes: Payment of the vehicles' U.S. Blue Book value, payments in excess of $20,000 limitation and free use of a rental car for 30 days.

The free vehicle move has several provisions.

· The service member must have the second vehicle delivered to one of three locations - vehicle processing centers in Baltimore, Md.; or Charleston, S.C., or a designated terminal in Brunswick, Ga.
· The vehicles must be shipped by May 1.

American Auto Logistics will prepare all necessary shipping documentation and clearances within Europe and will deliver the vehicle to the vehicle processing center nearest the member's new duty station.

For the free shipment, contact the center or terminal five days prior to delivery, said Antonelli.

Required documents:

· A copy of the member's original orders
· A power of attorney authorizing delivery on behalf of the member
· Lien or leaseholder release, if applicable
· Copy of the vehicle title or registration (U.S. Customs mandates that the registration can only be accepted in lieu of a title if the POV is owned outright)

The Baltimore center is located at 2501 Broening Highway. Phone (800) 631-5751 or (410) 631-5751. POC: Carlene Jack.

The Charleston center is located at 1599 Oceanic St. Phone (800) 747-9223 or (845) 805-6667. POC: Jennifer Cook.

For delivery to Brunswick, Ga., contact Logistics Coordinators Ltd., American Auto Logistics agent five days prior to delivery. Contact Irene Markoglu or Vilma Velez at (201) 505-4002/4005. The delivery address is Atlantic Vehicle Processors, Colonel Island Terminal, Brunswick, Ga. Contact Marsha Pierce at (912) 267-6766. Logistics coordinators will fax the member a document required for delivery to the Brunswick terminal.

American Auto Logistics delivers approximately 75,000 privately owned vehicles for Department of Defense service members annually. (FROM MILITARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
