ALEXANDRIA, Va. (USTCNS) --- The U.S. Coast Guard will have a permanent presence in New York Harbor thanks to the Military Traffic Management Command.

On behalf of the Army, MTMC has arranged the transfer of a 27-acre site to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard had used a site at the Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne in recent years as a navigational support site since the closure of nearby Governor's Island.

A new building was built there in 1997 and renovations continue, said Cdr. Mark Frost, Commanding Officer, Civil Engineer Providence.

Now, this site has been permanently conveyed to the Coast Guard at no charge.

"We're delighted to be able to leave the Coast Guard a permanent presence in New York Harbor," said John Jakubowski, a MTMC legal officer working on the Base Realignment & Closure action.

"This will be a permanent reminder of the long and valued service Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne played in the nation's defense."

Under the agreement signed Jan. 12, the Coast Guard will obtain use to the 27-acre parcel adjacent to a deep-water dock, said Jakubowski.

"It is a wonderful waterfront location," said Jakubowski. "Environmental engineers tell us that the channel is the deepest natural watercourse in the entire harbor."

"It is a major milestone for the Coast Guard," said Frost. "It obviously provides as us a permanent home for the Aids-To-Navigation Team and the buoy tenders that work at that location."

"With this action, we know we will have a permanent presence in New York Harbor."

The station has a permanent staff of approximately 20 Coast Guard personnel.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Paul Johnson agreed to release the site in August 1999, said Virginia King, MTMC's Base Realignment and Closure Program Manager. However, environmental issues delayed the transfer.

The transfer of the 27-acre site is part of the final MTMC transfer of Bayonne. In the near future, the rest of the two-and-a-half mile long terminal will be conveyed to the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority. (FROM MILITARY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
