DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (USTCNS) --- Twenty-one distinguished visitors as part of the Strategic Distribution Management Initiative team, received a tour of the 436th Aerial Port Squadron and the "Super Port" here.

"Air Mobility Command, USTRANSCOM (U.S. Transportation Command) and other agencies with transportation and supply issues have partnered with EUCOM (European Command) and CENTCOM (Central Command) to form the SDMI team," said Maj. Joseph Yates, 436th Aerial Port Squadron, operations officer.

The visitors came to tour the Aerial Port, to see how the squadron operated, and what effect SDMI has on Aerial Port services.

"The primary purpose of the visit was for key members of the SDMI team to observe how cargo moves to the port, is processed, palletized, and loaded onto aircraft for transport to Europe," said Yates.

The tour started off with an overview of how the Aerial Port operated and the scheduling of the various airframes traveling through Dover.

The SDMI team visited the Air Terminal Operations Center where coordination of incoming cargo occurs.

The SDMI process was also examined, explaining how the process affects load planning, freight and ramp. The tour identified the communication necessary between the port and Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

"The idea is to get an item, or part, from the supplier to the user in the most effective manner possible," said Yates. "The Defense Distribution Center at Susquehanna, Pa., the 436th Aerial Port Squadron at Dover, and the Theater Distribution Center at Ramstein (AB) are key players in this process."

The final stop on the tour was the Air Lines of Communication dock on the flightline side of the port.

"This is where the pre-built pallets arrive, are processed, then loaded onto the K-Loaders," said Yates.

"The visit was successful on two fronts," said Yates. "The visitors received a new appreciation of the optimized 'as is' process at Dover, and face to face contact between the parties opened the door for future improvements." (FROM DOVER AIR FORCE BASE PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
