NAPLES, Italy (USTCNS) --- A U.S. Marine Corps security team recently held shipboard security training with the crew of special mission ship USNS Henson at Cadiz, Spain.

The Naval Station, Rota, Spain-based Marine Corp Security Force Company trained the crew March 12-16 in a variety of shipboard security 'engagement' tactics including small arms, anti-terrorism, bomb threats, hostage situations, and waterborne attacks.

The crew first practiced simulated security-related scenarios using an Indoor Simulator Marksmanship Trainer, or ISMT-a 'virtual reality' video projection security system simulating a shipboard environment.

"The ISMT trainer helped the crew understand the many security situations, which they may encounter in port and at sea," MSCEUR force protection officer Shawn Winter said.

The crew then went to the firing range where they practiced live fire exercises with 9mm pistols, 12-gage shotguns and even M-16 automatic rifles. 21 of Henson's crewmembers are now designated as small arms qualified.

The training included a briefing by security force company commander Marine Corps Maj. Andrew Crabb who discussed protecting the Henson in port.

Other Marines in the company then briefed Henson's crew on their security plans depending on different threat conditions. The group then surveyed a port to practice the identification of potential security risks, and then toured the ship.

Waterborne attack scenarios included approach by hostile craft, hostile divers, and even piracy. 'The attack on the USS Cole last year opened many eyes to the dangers our ships face, especially in ports where they are very vulnerable. This training prepares our civilian mariners for potential threats," Winter said.

According to Winter, this intensive force protection training was the first the Marine Corps Company, Rota, had done with a Military Sealift Command ship.

"This is a great opportunity for both commands to establish joint military training, which will benefit us both," Winter said. (FROM MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND - EUROPE PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
