National Defense Transportation Day and National Transportation Week 2001

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) -- On May 16, 1957, the United States Congress approved the third Friday in May of each year as "National Defense Transportation Day." On May 14, 1962, Congress declared the third week in May as "National Transportation Week." This year, the defense transportation community will celebrate National Defense Transportation Day May 18, as part of National Transportation Week May 13-19, 2001.

It is only fitting that National Transportation Week is coupled with the day we celebrate the excellence of the defense transportation system. Every day, the U.S. Transportation Command and its transportation component commands, Air Mobility Command, Military Sealift Command, and Military Traffic Management Command, partner with our nation's powerful and innovative commercial transportation industry and other government transportation agencies to provide our country a global transportation capability that is unparalleled anywhere in the world.

I am proud to report that the great men and women of U.S. Transportation Command continue to thrive in a world of fast-paced change--all the while maintaining our focus on improving our position as the finest, most capable, transportation system in the world. In fact, our celebrations this week are only possible because of all of you who make USTRANSCOM the center of excellence that it is…envied throughout the world! Enjoy!
