U.S. Flag vessel carrying MTMC cargo reports fire

MONTVALE, N.J. (USTCNS) -- An investigation is under way to determine the cause of a fire on a ship carrying Military Traffic Management Command cargo.

The fire took place June 7 on the U.S. Flag ship Tellus, operated by American Roll-on/Roll-off Carriers, of Montvale, N.J. The Tellus was three days' sailing distance from the United States when the fire broke out.

Investigators and shipping representatives went aboard the vessel today (June 14) when the ship docked in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Details regarding possible cargo damage are expected to be available Monday and Tuesday (June 18-19).

Because of the fire, the ship was rerouted from its original destination of Radicatel, France to Bremerhaven.

The ship's total cargo includes more than 200 privately owned vehicles belonging to American service members.

"At this time, the condition of the cargo, particularly passenger vehicles, remains unclear pending its inspection upon arrival and discharge," said Tony Ryan, the shipping firm's Vice President and General Manager.

The privately owned vehicles were being shipped by American Auto Logistics, Inc., of Monroe, N.Y. The firm is MTMC's prime contractor for the Global POV Contract, which ships an average of 75,000 privately owned vehicles for Department of Defense service members annually.
