SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- The first two 25,000 pound (25K) capacity Next Generation Small Loaders (NGSL) was officially delivered to Dover Air Force Base in a ceremony June 19 at the base's Air Mobility Command Museum.
Over the next four years, the Air Force is scheduled to receive 264 of the loaders as part of a production contract worth about $140M.
The NGSL is a rapidly deployable, high-reach mechanized aircraft loader that can transport and lift up to 25,000 pounds of cargo onto military and civilian aircraft. The vehicle will be named "Halvorsen" after Col Gail S. Halvorsen (Ret.).
Col. Halvorsen, winner of the 1948 Cheney Award, is best known as the "Candy Bomber" who air-dropped candy to German children during Operation Vittles (the Berlin Airlift).
Gen Charles T. "Tony" Robertson, Jr., commander in chief, U.S. Transportation Command and commander, Air Mobility Command hosted the ceremony. (FROM AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
