WASHINGTON (USTCNS) --- When you think of Texas you might think the Alamo, cattle, perhaps the Dallas Cowboys. Most likely you don't think of the maritime industry.

An historic Houston college is changing that, attracting attention to its expanding transportation studies program.

Texas Southern University is a historically Black college in the heart of Houston, Texas. Offering the standard spectrum of undergraduate and graduate programs, TSU also boasts a Transportation Studies Department that has been gaining visibility with the attention of members of Congress, local government officials and leaders in the defense and maritime industries.

Vice Adm. Gordon S. Holder, commander of the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command, visited TSU last March and talked with students in the transportation studies program. Vice Adm. Holder's command is the ocean transportation provider for the Department of Defense and relies heavily on the U.S. Merchant Marine for crewing its ships and a variety of other maritime specialists for operating its shoreside offices.

The command,- which operates about 113 active ships worldwide, includes almost 8,000 personnel - mostly civilian -- with about two-thirds serving at sea.

"I wanted to encourage the students to look into the multitude of opportunities available in the defense transportation and maritime industries," says Vice Adm. Holder.

After visiting the college in Texas, Holder offered to host a group of students and professors at Military Sealift Command headquarters in Washington, D.C.

"I thought it would be great to bring the students to Washington, D.C. where they could get a firsthand look at some of the job opportunities I shared with them in Texas," said Holder.

"Attracting young people to transportation studies is essential," he says, "The mobility and flexibility of U.S. forces worldwide depends heavily on our nation's sealift capabilities and those capabilities rely on individuals who pursue maritime careers."

In addition to the student's visit to MSC headquarters, the group enjoyed ship tours in Baltimore and personal meetings with leaders including U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, 18th District, Texas, and Holder.

According to MSC staffer Navy Lt. Joe Parran who escorted the group, the trip made a huge impact on the students.

"Two of the four students are leaning towards joining the Navy, and one wanted to pursue a maritime transportation specialist program," said Parran.

What made these desert-dwelling students interested in maritime careers? They say it was their visit to Washington and the time, attention and inspiration of a few leaders.

Military Sealift Command is the ocean transportation provider for the Department of Defense. Ship missions vary from the transport and afloat prepositioning of defense cargo; to underway replenishment and other direct support to Navy ships at sea; to at-sea data collection for the U.S. military and other U.S. government agencies.
