SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- U.S. Transportation Command published the oral history of a renowned government and civilian defense transportation pioneer here recently.

The history, entitled "Edward J. Driscoll, Forming a Partnership for National Defense: Commercial Airlines and the Air Force," was published by USTRANSCOM's research center.

Driscoll, until last year chairman, president and CEO of the National Air Carrier Association was interviewed by James K. Matthews, Ph.D., director of the USTRANSCOM research center, and Air Force Col. Robert C. Owen, Ph.D., chief, policy and doctrine division, directorate of plans, Air Mobility Command.

The 71-page history focuses on five major areas: Post-War Airlift: Berlin and Korea; Military Air Transport Service (MATS) and the Civil Airlines; The Role of Military Air Transport Service in Peace and War; New Cooperation Between MATS and the Civil Airlines; and the Future of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF).

Driscoll's insights to the defense transportation system come from over 25 years of government service from 1941-1966 in addition to 32 years, 1967-2000, in the National Air Carrier Association. He was also vice president of World Airways from 1966-1967.

He served as special assistant to the secretary of the Air Force, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for transportation and communication and executive director of the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board. He also served for nearly 10 years in the Military Air Transport Service.

Since 1970 he has served as a senior member of the Air Force National Defense Transportation Association Military Advisory Committee.

For a copy of the history, contact the USTRANSCOM Research Center by email at USTCRC@hq.transcom.mil or by phone at (618) 229-1167.
