Base members to earn Humanitarian Service Medal

GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. (USTCNS) --- Headquarters Air Force Personnel Center recently announced the approval of the Humanitarian Service Medal for members of Grand Forks AFB members who distinguished themselves in relief efforts during the June 2000 floods in Grand Forks County.

On June 12, 2000, severe storms, flooding, and ground saturation resulted in the Federal Emergency Management Agency announcing federal disaster aid for Grand Forks County families.

The President authorized this assistance on June 27, following a review of FEMA's analysis of North Dakota's request for federal relief.

Grand Forks County received damage to roads, bridges, culverts, farmlands, homes, businesses, and other public facilities as a result of torrential rainstorms. According to the National Weather Service, some areas of the county received up to 15 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. As a result, the Grand Forks County Commissioner asked the base to assist in relief operations.

Commanders are making the final list of airmen who will receive the medal for this humanitarian operation. (FROM AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS)
