SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- This September 18th, our Air Force celebrates fifty-four years of service to our great nation. Since 1947, the men and women of the United States Air Force, active and reserve, have been an integral part of our national defense team. Combat actions from Korea to Vietnam, from the Dominican Republic, to Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, the Persian Gulf and the skies over Kosovo, have made clear the critical importance of air power to the warfight. Likewise, humanitarian operations from Berlin to the Balkans have called upon the unique global capability of the Air Force's mobility corps for support--a capability that no other Air Force in the world can match.

Today's troubled world continues to call on the unique strengths of our Air Force…and Air Force members of U.S. Transportation Command and Air Mobility Command prove daily their critical and central roles in support of this mission…providing unparalleled global reach--anytime, anywhere. This "Total Force" effort literally begins and ends with our contribution to both peacetime and combat operations. Indeed, your legacy to America's next generation is one of leadership, dedication and excellence.

This year's Air Force anniversary also marks my last on active duty. During my 33 years of active duty service, I have never been as proud of the skills, courage, and commitment of my fellow airmen as I am today. As Brenda and I prepare to depart the active force, we take with us a host of fond memories of our visits with the heart and soul of today's great and noble Air Force--its men and women--military and civilian--active and reserve. Thank you for your tremendous support -- everyday -- for our country and our way of life…and thank you for allowing me to serve with you. In the years to come, you will always be in my thoughts and prayers…and I will never cease to swell with pride at your accomplishments.

I salute each of you. Along with my deepest respect, please accept my best wishes, always, for clear skies, fair winds, and much, much success. Today's Air Force: No one comes close.
