Navy Birthday 2001

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- This year's October 13 commemoration of the U.S. Navy's 226th birthday finds our nation in a state of war--a war like none before--the nature of which is still unfolding. As it has in so many crises before in our history, our great Navy will undoubtedly be called upon once again to shoulder a significant portion of the load as we confront the challenges of the weeks and months ahead. Indeed, the Navy's role in America's response will be essential to our ultimate victory…and rest assured, victory will be ours.

On behalf of the men and women of U.S. Transportation Command, I send deepest condolences to the families of those sailors and Navy civilians who lost their lives in the Pentagon and World Trade Centers--patriots all--going about their duties, dedicated to making the world safe for freedom-loving people. We will not forget their sacrifice and we are committed to honoring their devotion to duty, to their families, and to their country.

Today's troubled world calls for a force with the history of achievement and the unique capabilities and strengths of our United States Navy. Indeed--your legacy to America's next generation is one of leadership, dedication and excellence--all of which are displayed daily, around the globe, by the sailors, mariners and civilians of our proud Military Sealift Command.

In the coming days, all of us in U.S. Transportation Command will sail ocean after ocean of uncharted seas. I have tremendous faith in your abundant talent, enthusiasm, and strong patriotic spirit and I am very, very proud of each of you. You are America's bright and shining light and, with that light, you will help lead our nation through this troubled time. For USTRANSCOM's sailors--Happy Birthday!
