SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- The timing couldn't be more appropriate for Air Mobility Command to unveil its new "Year of the Warrior Spirit" theme for fiscal year 2002. And now more than ever, with the command dealing daily with the pressing issues associated with America's response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on New York City and the Pentagon, AMC officials want to put the spotlight on the people behind the mission.

"Although we were hit on our own soil...America's response has been global. Taking the fight to our enemies is what the warriors of Air Mobility Command are all about, and that, in essence, is what 'Warrior Spirit' is all about," said Gen. Charles T. "Tony" Robertson, Jr., commander in chief, U.S. Transportation Command, and AMC commander. "As we focus on our warfighting skills this year, we'll also be putting the spotlight on those things that make us, and our calling, so special…our profession of arms, our heritage, and our esprit de corps."

While last year's theme of retention and recruiting focused on the benefits of being in the Air Force, the general said this year's theme will build on a foundation of "Warriors - First and Foremost."

"Our call to duty and our love of country is really why so many of us stay in the Air Force," he said. "The attacks of 11 September jolted many Americans out of their normal day-to-day routines in a very abrupt manner, but the 'warrior spirit' which defines who and what we are, enabled us to respond in a manner that left most Americans watching us in awe.

And, even more satisfying, the 'warrior spirit' of the men and women of AMC's Total Force continues to be proudly displayed everywhere I go. The good news is that we don't need to tell our people how to have warrior spirit or that they should be focused on being warriors first ... because they're already showing it, every day, around the world, by the example they're setting."

Year of the Warrior Spirit project officer Maj. Glen Downing said what the AMC Year of the Warrior Spirit committee wants to do, along with base-level representatives, is highlight past and present-day heroes and recognize people who embody warrior spirit on a daily basis.

While Downing and his crew are making final plans for those aspects of the campaign, he said that even though the theme of warrior spirit may seem directed toward those in uniform, it applies to the entire Air Force family.

"Our spouses and children must have that warrior spirit to support us, and our civilian counterparts certainly maintain warrior spirit," he said. "We've certainly seen that spirit in the men and women throughout the command, and we'll need that for sustained effort in a new kind of war."
