SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- U.S. Transportation Command's Marine Corps element celebrated the service's 226th birthday in a ceremony here Nov. 7.
Led by the commander of the Marine Corps element, Col. J.J. Pomfret, the element, military and civilian members of USTRANSCOM, and veteran Marines from the region commemorated the birthday complete with music and birthday cake. The formal birthdate is November 10, 1775.
In a brief speech to the approximately 250 ceremony attendees, Pomfret used to the event to illustrate the courage of Marines in battle by relating stories of valor of Marines at the epic World War II battle at Iwo Jima.
Maj. John Licari, the element's oldest Marine, passed the ceremonial first piece of the Marine Corps birthday cake to the youngest Marine, Cpl. Jesse Haywood as a symbol of passing knowledge.
The ceremony included musical accompaniment by the Scott Air Force Base's Officer Spouse's Club vocal group the Heathertone's and the Air Mobility Command's Band of Mid-America.
Formal commemoration of the Marine Corps birthday began on November 10, 1921. The date was chosen because on that day the Second Continental Congress resolved in 1775 to raise two battalions of Continental Marines.
