NAPLES, Italy (USTCNS) --- Military Sealift Command has a new deputy commander, and Military Sealift Command, Europe, and Military Sealift Command, Atlantic, has a new mobilization commander, Rear Adm. John M. Stewart, Jr.

Stewart relieved Rear Adm. Robert Clark as mobilization commander, who moves to the U.S. Navy's Second Fleet, as deputy reserve commander.

Four MSC Europe, or MSCEUR, reserve units also welcomed new commanders. In Adelphi Md., Capt. Stephen Treacy relieved Capt. Lanny Glover as commander of MSCEUR Reserve Unit 106, while Capt. Michael McCaffrey assumed command of MSCEUR Reserve Unit Western Mediterranean 102, in Syracuse, NY. from Capt. Mike Cunningham.

Capt. Mark Munson relieved Capt. Mike Finley as commander of MSCEUR Reserve Unit Northern Europe 104, Wilmington, Del., while Cunningham relieved Capt. John Johnson in Baltimore, Md., as commander of MSCEUR Reserve Unit Eastern Mediterranean 106. All command changes were held in late September and early October. The only mainstay was Capt. John McNamara who remains in command of MSCEUR Reserve Unit 101, based in Quincy, Mass.

Clark commanded the reserve units since October 1999, overseeing no less than 12 units from New York to Texas. He also commanded two Unified Charger exercises, which simulate the movement of heavy combat equipment and supplies at commercial ports throughout Europe in the event of a crisis situation.

"Admiral Clark was very active and involved during his tour," McNamara said. "People have always been his main focus, and he made the effort to talk with junior sailors at every function or event."

Stewart most recently served as chief of staff for the Iceland Defense Force-Joint Reserve Unit. Recalled to active duty for six months as executive assistant to the director of naval reserve, he also served as a member of the Naval Reserve Force Executive Steering Committee and on the Chief of Naval Operations Awards Board.

Stewart's active duty tours include assignment aboard the frigate USS Harold E. Holt, and instructor at the Naval Reserve Officer's Training Corps Unit at his alma mater, Vanderbilt University, where he received his master's in business administration with honors in 1982.

"Our reserve units hold the key to America's ability to project military power overseas," said MSC Europe commander Capt. Gary Ellis. "They are professional, dedicated and ready to mobilize to support our nation's military objectives."
