SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- "Boy, this seems real familiar." Navy Captain Paula Bozdech-Veater is addressing members of Joint Transportation Reserve Unit (JTRU) a few days after Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

The Navy reservist recalled to active duty is standing in an auditorium where 10 years to the month JTRU was first formally stood up to support U.S. Transportation Command and as members of the unit were deactivated from supporting Operation Desert Shield. She has just been recalled to active duty herself to serve as USTRANSCOM's deputy for reserve affairs, responsible for bringing reservists onto active duty for tours as long as two years.

To date, a total of 59 reservists attached to USTRANSCOM have been recalled to active duty: 13 Navy, 13 Air Force, 19 Army, 7 Coast Guard, all members of the JTRU and 7 Navy members of the Joint Intelligence Center Transportation Unit 169.

Hours after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, reservists from all services originally slated for a couple of weeks of active duty at USTRANSCOM in support of normal operations were reporting to USTRANSCOM at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. to augment active duty staff as they geared up to handle the national crisis.

"We were worried about the Navy's ability to respond but they ended up being the first on base and the smoothest to get on board," said Army Col. Michael Janovicz, JTRU Army element commander who is among 52 JTRU reservists to date recalled to active duty.

Bozdech-Veater said one of the reasons why the recall was going so smoothly was because JTRU regularly supports USTRANSCOM through the year.

"This really is not new to us," she said. "JTRU provides USTRANSCOM with approximately 30% of the personnel they need to stand watch in various positions. Our people have been doing this for the last 10 years. They know their jobs, and they are ready."

On the average, reservists are getting one to two weeks to notify civilian employers, families and other associations before reporting to their respective services and new jobs. Bozdech-Veater took a different approach, reporting first with little else than her Navy uniform. Once critical personnel were on board, she took a few days off back home in Pennsylvania.

"I needed to pick up a few things like winter clothing and get my own things in order," she said.
