SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- Less than two weeks after the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, Navy Capt. Pauline Bozdech-Veater addressed Joint Transportation Reserve Unit members "standing by" to be mobilized. She was among the first recalled reservists.
She serves as U.S. Transportation Command deputy for reserve affairs responsible for mobilizing reservists.
"We weren't sure how it was going to go but it went like clockwork," Bozdech-Veater said. "We actually had people on watch a few hours after the terrorists attacks."
JTRU provides USTRANSCOM with 30%of their watch standing workforce. JTRU's 160 members representing all five military services are trained to support USTRANSCOM's mission of providing one-stop global transportation.
JTRU members work real-world problems and projects, support exercises, cover vacant active-duty billets, serve in directorates throughout the command, and provide all kinds of augmentation for contingencies like Operation Enduring Freedom. These workdays are in addition to the 24-drill weekend workdays each drilling reservist contributes a year.
"We try to match immediate needs against JTRU members training requirements to maximize the use of all available funding and personnel," she said.
Only days after the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, JTRU mobilized the first of more than 55 reservists recalled to date to serve as transportation liaison officers (LNOs). LNOs were dispatched to commands worldwide to advise and interface with planners and tactical commanders on transportation issues and concerns.
"Many reported ready for duty the same day they were mobilized," Bozdech-Veater said. "Mobilization took less than 6 hours on average and went smoothly because mobilization documents and records were in order. Medical, dental, immunization records, wills, power-of-attorney, direct deposit, government credit card, and family care plans were up to date"
USTRANSCOM's JTRU is the first Department of Defense-authorized "joint" reserve unit activated September 1991 to support Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
"I was standing here ten years ago when JTRU was first activated," she said. "It's good to see the system working the way it was designed to work."
