SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- Shortly after September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the U.S. Army mobilized Glen Carbon, Ill. native Walter B. Harris in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

A chief warrant officer, Harris serves in the Army Element of the Joint Transportation Reserve Unit, U.S. Transportation Command, at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

He will be mobilized for a year as a force protection officer (Military Police) with USTRANSCOM, and is one of only four Army personnel in the Force Protection Office.

A computer specialist for the DISA-DITCO Corporation, Harris served 6 years of active duty in the U.S. Army, and thus far more than 11 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. Upon joining JTRU, Harris found his considerable expertise with computer systems and networks most welcome.

At the same time, he said he found that knowledge of advanced military computer networks would improve his own professional expertise.

Harris' family backs his service.

"My family understands that I'm in the Army Reserve, and there is always a chance that I could be called up," said Harris. "Now that its happened, the fact that I am mobilized to the same place I drill has minimized the impact on the family. So overall, this has been a positive experience."

USTRANSCOM provides air, land, and sea transportation for the Department of Defense, both in time of peace and times of war. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard (active and reserve) and Department of Defense civilian personnel staff the command.

JTRU was the first Department of Defense-authorized "joint" reserve unit. It was activated ten years ago to support USTRANSCOM's global transportation mission in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. JTRU provides USTRANSCOM with 30% of its watch standing workforce.
