NAPLES, Italy (USTCNS) --- A naval reservist who also serves as a lawyer for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, or ICTY, recently escorted Military Sealift Command, Northern Europe, or MSCO NOREUR, staff members on a tour of the war crimes tribunal.

Gina Butler-Ford, head of the Trial Support Unit, office of the ICTY Prosecutor, is an 18-year reserve yeoman, now 'drilling' with MSCO NOREUR.

Petty Officer First Class Butler-Ford gave the grand tour to Chief Warrant Officer Two Paul Smith, Petty Officer Second Class Dawn Scott, Petty Officer First Class Matt Parrish, Deane Swickard, and Paul Weitenberg. The United Nations court is located in nearby Den Haag, the Netherlands.

According to Butler-Ford, ICTY has a staff of about 1,300, representing 85 countries, including judges from 12 countries. Normally, there are six trials underway daily in three separate courtrooms, although the trial of Slobodan Milosevic, former President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, occupies one courtroom daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The group then toured the registry, prosecutor's, and trail branches of the tribunal, and visited the main conference area where legal advisory meetings are held to discuss ongoing or pending trials.

Patricia Sellers-Viseurs, a legal officer for the prosecution branch, briefed the group on the tribunal's role in investigating war crimes involving sexual assault, rape, terrorism, murder and genocide.

Seeing history in the making, MSCO NOREUR staff members also observed the trial of Milosevic. Testifying before the court at the time was Stanislov Galic, former commander of Sarajevo 'Romanija' corps. The trial expects to call over 600 witnesses and last up to two years.

At the end of the tour, the group caught a glimpse of the penitentiary center at nearby Scheveningen, where Milosevic and other war crimes defendants are held. For more information, visit the ICTY website at http://www.un.org/icty.
