FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo (USTCNS)--- U.S. Transportation Command's chief of staff addressed soldiers and spouses at the 58th Transportation Battalion's annual ball here June 7.

Maj. Gen. Butch Pair, USTRANSCOM's chief of staff for the past two years addressed more than 200 soldiers, Marines, airmen and invited guests as the keynote speaker.

"I can assure you…at this piece of the (Defense Transportation System), this is where the DTS really begins," said Pair.

Mobility sets us apart as a country from the other nations, Pair said.

"We have strategic mobility, we can get places and we can get there (over) great distances. Strategic mobility gives our president options that other world leaders don't have," said Pair.

He emphasized that the training cadre of the 58th are making an important contribution to the military's ability to meet the country's strategic mobility needs.

"You transporters train (and) feed the DTS with just what we need," said Pair. "Your product is trained soldiers. You have a 600 vehicle fleet, you've trained over 7,704 new soldiers and Marines, you've traveled a million and half miles without a major accident. You set the standards."

Military personnel trained here will likely be involved in present military operations around the world.

"Some of the people you are training today will be in the campaigns wherever this global war on terrorism takes us. Make sure your people are trained and ready," Pair said.

The future of transportation will likely also involve many of the new soldiers being trained today.

"The Transportation Corps is moving along and actively transforming and playing a role in Army transformation," said Pair. "Right now we're working with catamarans, double-hulled vessels and some of you will probably see lighter-than-air aircraft in our corps one day deploying large heavy loads."

The 58th Transportation Battalion's mission is to continuously conduct and support multi-level and inter-service transportation training; to produce combat-ready, disciplined, highly motivated, physically fit, values based, entry-level motor transport operators for the Department of Defense.

The battalion is commanded by Lt. Col. David Nelson.

The battalion was originally formed as the 2d Battalion of the 27th Quartermaster Regiment (Truck) at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, in July 1942. Its lineage includes service during World War II campaigns in Italy and in Vietnam.

The battalion was deactivated in 1972. It was reactivated at Fort Leonard Wood in 1986 and has since provided training to more than 40,000 truck drivers, mechanics, recovery specialists and seven different engineer occupational specialties.

Pair is a graduate of Jacksonville State University. He is also a graduate of the Quartermaster Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Army Command and General Staff College, and Army War College. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster) and Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster).

USTRANSCOM is one of nine unified commands and is headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. Its component commands include the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, the Navy's Military Sealift Command, and the Army's Military Traffic Management Command.
