SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, IL (USTCNS) --- As part of a better understanding of the community surrounding Scott AFB, Gen. John Handy, commander in chief, United Stated Transportation Command, and commander, Air Mobility Command, and Col. Darren McDew, commander, 375th Airlift Wing, toured the site for the new Scott-Shiloh MetroLink station June 25, then went to the College Station at Southwestern Illinois College to ride a special train to St. Louis. The commanders were accompanied by local community civic leaders, and officials of the St. Clair County Transit District and the Bi-State Development Agency.
The new MetroLink station for Scott AFB and the Village of Shiloh, scheduled for completion in May 2003, located on State Road 158, will have easy access for base commuters. There will be a 200-space parking lot on the base side of the station, and commuters need only walk a short distance to the station. Long term parking will be provided.
Parking for local riders will be on the front side of the station.
Speaking about the new station, Handy said base officials and residents are very excited about the opening this time next year. “The link to the airport and to downtown St. Louis is priceless,” he said. “Several thousand people visit the base each year to attend conferences, meetings and to visit residents of the base, and this would make it easier for them to travel. A car rental company would be a nice start for development.”
Shiloh Mayor Jim Vernier said plans for the area is still in the works, and that the village is working with the Bi-State on these concerns.
St. Clair County Board Chairman John Baricevic said they are still waiting for word on funding for the extension from the new Scott station to MidAmerica Airport. “We are optimistic that it will be approved.”
Scott AFB is the area’s largest employer south of Springfield, Ill., with over 12,000 workers and residents. Its economic impact to the area is more than $1.3 billion annually. Scott is located 22 miles east of St. Louis near Belleville and O’Fallon, Ill.
