MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, FL (USTCNS) --- The Greater Tampa Bay Area received the Air Mobility Command Community Support Award, also known as the Abilene Trophy. A delegation from Abilene, Texas, Chamber of Commerce made the formal presentation during a luncheon July 31, at the Wyndham Harbour Island Hotel in front of more than 125 community and military members.

“On behalf of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, congratulations to the Greater Tampa Bay Area and MacDill Air Force Base for your selection as the recipient of the 2001 AMC Community Support Award,” said Celia Davis, Abilene Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee chairperson. “The competition was fierce and definitely a challenge for the committee to select only one award recipient.”

Davis and Dr. Jim Webster, vice chair of the Abilene Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee, presented the award to the Tampa community represented by Kim Scheeler, Tampa Chamber; Tammy Bracewell, Brandon Chamber; and Jerry Clark, South Tampa Chamber.

The trophy, a bronze eagle in flight, is approximately four feet tall and two feet wide. The winning community keeps the trophy for one year before it is passed on to the next recipient. At the end of the year, the community receives a miniature trophy it can keep.

The Abilene Military Affairs Committee and AMC established the award in January 1999 to recognize a civilian community for its outstanding support to a nearby AMC installation between January and December of the preceding year. Every year the chamber of commerce of the city near an AMC base, with the help from the base, compiles a package to present to the Abilene Military Affairs Committee.

“We could not do what we do successfully without the support of our friends and neighbors in the community,” said Brig. Gen. Wayne Hodges, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander.

“Even before my arrival here last August, I was told about the great relationship between the base and the surrounding communities. It’s by far the greatest amount of support I’ve ever seen.”
