SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill (USTCNS) --- Gen. John Handy, commander in chief, United States Transportation Command, and commander, Air Mobility Command, visited with members 434th Air Refueling Wing at Grissom Air Reserve Base, Ind. recently. The 434th Air Refueling Wing returned recently from a forward location in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the war on terrorism.

Speaking to the Air Force Reserve Command unit, Handy said, “In Air Mobility Command, the Guard and reserves are by far the greatest piece of our capability, having well over 50 percent of our assets. Anytime there is a crisis in the world, especially one like this that challenges the very heart beat of the United States itself, our reservists become the people of choice to help us surge and take care of the problem.

“In the war on terrorism,” he continued, “the reserve components were called upon right from the very start and have continued to be very aggressive and active today. That contribution is priceless and one that we cannot live without.”

The general went on, “Our Guard and reserve team mates will be challenged to balance all the competing priorities that they face in the years ahead. The perform a myriad of duties and responsibilities: family, full time civilian employment, and part time military duties that often turn into an additional full time challenge.”

Our families are very important to the success of all of us. None of us can meet the demands of today’s world without our loved ones right there beside us.

“American families are contributing their loved ones to the cause, a cause this nation has not faced since Pearl Harbor,” he said. “I am sincerely thankful for the support they provide.”

Handy also recognizes how employers assist the command’s mission.

“I admire employers who recruit and retain reservists in their work force,” he said. “They are supportive of the nation’s needs. Hiring reserves is good, it’s healthy, it brings people into their employment that have a tremendous sense of dedication, devotion to duty, honesty and integrity, a sense of well being, and confidence that you don’t readily find.

“I also admire employers who willingly encourage their employees to come work for us to help defend the nation. That is a contribution that employers know is deeply appreciated, and one that the nation is also proud of,” he continued.

As the single manager of America’s Defense Transportation System, USTRANSCOM coordinates the aircraft, ships, trains and trucks that allow America to project power and sustain forces worldwide, for as long as they are needed.

“In the command we know our guard and reserve units across the United States are totally prepared for what their nation needs them to do,” Handy said. “It’s a remarkable contribution of citizen soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. It’s something this nation sincerely appreciates. The people in USTRANSCOM treasure that capability. Our goal and responsibility is not to abuse them. Take advantage of the capability when we can, but also make sure to allow them to rest and recuperate when possible. Our Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command professionals are a priceless resource across the country.”
