U.S. Transportation Command promotes new deputy commander in chief

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE. Ill (USTCNS) --- Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Gary H. Hughey was promoted today to the rank of Lt. Gen. here and will be the first Marine to serve as deputy commander in chief, U.S. Transportation Command since its establishment in 1987.

Air Force Gen. John W. Handy, commander in chief, USTRANSCOM presided over the promotion ceremony.

“He (Hughey) is a perfect example of the U.S. Marine,” said Handy referring to the mystique and tradition surrounding the Corps. “This is the dawn of a new era here at TRANSCOM.”

Hughey will be USTRANSCOM’s eighth Deputy Commander in Chief following a tour of duty as Deputy Commander of U.S. Forces Japan.

“This is an extremely emotionally, overwhelming event for me and my family, and I am honored by all of your presence,” said Hughey.

“There are so many people in my life that are responsible for my being here today,” Hughey said as he shared stories about many of the people that influenced his life, and were present for the ceremony.

One of his greatest influences Hughey said has been his mother. “She’s a large part of who I am. Throughout my life she told me it’s an honor to serve your country and a duty to answer the call.”

The promotion was not the only highlight of the ceremony. Handy also led Hughey in a reaffirmation of his oath of office.

“After what our country has been through, these words (the oath) mean more to each of us,” Handy said. “I ask that all of you think about the meaning of these words. . .”

Hughey will replace Army Lt. Gen. Daniel G. Brown who has served as the deputy commander in chief, USTRANSCOM since October 1999. Brown will retire from military service next month in a ceremony at Ft. Eustis, Va.
