SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill., (USTCNS) --- Gen. John Handy recently visited Jordan to take part in the Computer Network Defense Symposium II, opened by His Majesty King Abdullah II.

His Royal Highness Prince Feisal, commander of the Royal Jordanian Air Force, hosted the symposium and gave the keynote address. He reviewed threats to computer network security systems on the global level, including classified government information, e-commerce, and information technology infrastructures. The Prince said the breach of these systems resulted in the loss of billions of dollars.

The purpose of the symposium, “Common Threats, Shared Solutions,” was to share a collective vision for the implementation of network security measures to help organizations and governments around the Middle East region, and to protect their commercial and national information resources.

Handy, commander of the United States Transportation Command, and commander, Air Mobility Command, explained the role of USTRANSCOM and how information technology is so important to the movement of personnel, equipment and supplies. “Our information technology is real time, real decisions to the right people at the right time,” he said. “The challenges are great, and it’s not without a lot of preparation and investment that we find ourselves today.

Brig. Gen. Gilbert Hawk, director, Command, Control, Communications and Computer Systems, at USTRANSCOM, said during his Symposium remarks that USTRANSCOM tracks 2.5 million transactions each day using the Global Transportation Network, 1 million of which comes from USTRANSCOM’s commercial partners. “For those of us in the IT business, the Internet is the new battlefield,” Hawk said. “We are more afraid of inside attacks than from outside sources. These are people that don’t practice good security measures, that don’t follow the strict rules and protected passwords that may leave the whole system vulnerable to attack.”

Hawk showed how protection by layers was the best defense against IT attacks.

As the single manager of America’s Defense Transportation System, USTRANSCOM coordinates the aircraft, ships, trains and trucks that allow America to project power and sustain forces worldwide, for as long as they are needed.

Attendees at the symposium included participants from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United States, France and the United Kingdom.
