SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- The Department of Defense announced today that thousands of American service members are deploying to the U.S. Central Command area of operations. The U.S. Transportation Command is planning, coordinating, and overseeing all of these complex movements from Scott AFB.

“Our workload has certainly increased, but our dynamite troops and component commands are keeping up with the pace”, said Maj Gen William Welser, director of operations and logistics at USTRANSCOM. “Our job is to support the warfighter. In this situation the U.S. Central Command is our customer, and we are responding to their requirements”.

The DoD announced the Army’s 16,500 soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division as being the largest unit to deploy. Soldiers from Ft. Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga. will join others from the division already serving in Kuwait.

“What we are doing right now is readying forces -– to give the President options”, said Welser.

The Army troops will draw pre-positioned equipment in the region and be ready for any eventuality, DoD officials said. However, certain division assets must be shipped to the area. Helicopters and other types of equipment will be shipped from Georgia and South Carolina.

The Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force are also sending a wide array of forces from bases around the U.S.

All modes of transportation are being used to move the deploying forces including air, land and sea.

“Our focus is on being both effective and efficient”, said Welser.

He explained that to be effective, USTRANSCOM’s goal is to meet the warfighter’s required delivery dates. Efficiency refers to employing our assets to maximize the use of resources.

“The USTRANSCOM team of experts from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard as well as our dedicated civilian force make it possible to provide exquisite support to our Nation’s warfighters,” added Welser.

USTRANSCOM is a unified command that provides global transportation for the DoD through its component commands: the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command, the Navy’s Military Sealift Command, and the Army’s Military Traffic Management Command.

Welser would not comment on any future deployments. But, the DoD press release says more deployment announcements are expected.
