SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, IL (March 4,USTCNS) -- Operations tempo moved into even higher gear today for U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) as 66 percent of the C-17 Globemaster III fleet was committed, and five ships loading and unloading equipment and supplies at one port.
"We are operating our fleet of ships and aircraft at historic levels. This past Saturday alone we had 74 C-17s committed in support of Central Command, Special Airlift Missions, training, sustainment, and presidential movement," said Col. Glen Joerger, Deputy Director of Operations at USTRANSCOM. "That's 74 percent of the 101 C-17s we currently have in the fleet. Just yesterday, we transported 7,808 passengers and 1,407 tons of equipment. This exceeds any single day passenger delivery total since the global war on terrorism began."
Also this weekend, four Large Medium Speed Roll On/Roll Off (LMSR) ships, and one Motor Vehicle ship were either loading or unloading 918,000 square feet of equipment and supplies at the Port of Ash Shuaybah, Kuwait, at the same time. "That's the equivalent of 16 football fields," said Joerger.
LMSRs are between 906 and 954 feet long, making them just shorter than an aircraft carrier.
USTRANSCOM is supporting the rotation of troops into and out of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and is expected to move approximately 230,000 men and women and 1 million tons of cargo.
As the single manager of America's Defense Transportation System, USTRANSCOM coordinates the aircraft, ships, trains and trucks that allow America to project power and sustain forces worldwide, for as long as they are needed.
