SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- Gen. John W. Handy is seeking feedback from Air Mobility Command Airmen on their personal safety. General Handy, commander of U.S. Transportation Command and AMC, is asking Airmen to complete a Web-based survey about the sexual harassment and assault climate within the command.

Within the next couple weeks, 63,000 members of the command will receive an e-mail link to the survey.

According to Chief Master Sgt. Tony Wyatt, chief, AMC Military Equal Opportunity Branch, command leaders hope to gain greater insight into the perceptions on the issues of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

"This survey will help us to better understand the impact these issues have on our overall human relations climate and the mission," said Chief Wyatt. "The information will enable leaders at all levels to develop and implement strategies to eradicate and better prevent incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault."

AMC is not the first command to ask its people to take this survey. In fact, Air Combat Command, Air Education and Training Command and Air Force Special Operations Command have all conducted the survey as a part of an Air Force-wide sexual assault assessment initiative directed by Secretary of the Air Force Dr. James G. Roche and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. Jumper.

In an e-mail letter to AMC personnel, which will carry the link, General Handy wrote, "This survey I am asking you (AMC personnel) to take gives us an opportunity to review our processes. The only way to fix a problem is to know about it. I am responsible to you to determine if the system is broken, and then fix it. For that reason, I solicit your candid feedback on this survey."

Chief Wyatt said the survey is not mandatory, but a true assessment depends on maximum participation. He also wants to ensure people understand their responses will be kept confidential.

"We realize this is a very sensitive topic, and that personal questions will be asked. But, the survey is very confidential. The information is being collected under the direction of the Air Force Survey Program, an independent agent acting on behalf of General Handy," said Chief Wyatt.

To avoid an overload of the e-mail system, the Plans, Analysis and Information Delivery Division at the Air Force Personnel Center in San Antonio will send the survey out in blocks of 10,000 over a six-day period.

Chief Wyatt also said some recipients may be receiving the survey for the second or even third time because other commands have run it. Previous completion should not prevent taking the survey again, he said. "We need to encourage our folks to take it again because previous results and feedback from those surveys were not provided to anyone in AMC."

In his letter, General Handy stresses the importance of reporting incidents of sexual assault. "If you have been a victim of sexual assault, I encourage you to contact your commander, your local (Air Force Office of Special Investigations) detachment, or your local Life Skills professionals," the general wrote. "I assure you, your chain of command is determined to prevent and deter sexual assault and to support victims if an incident occurs."
