Brig. Gen. Charles W. Fletcher, Jr. to assume SDDC command Aug. 24

ALEXANDRIA, Va., (USTCNS) --- One of the Army's top logisticians will soon assume command of the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command.

Brig. Gen. Charles W. Fletcher, Jr., takes command of the Army component of U.S. Transportation Command on Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m., at a parade ground ceremony at Summerall Field, Fort Myer. Va.

Fletcher assumes command from Maj. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, commander since October 2002.

Fletcher currently serves as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4 (Logistics), at the Pentagon.

A West Point graduate, Fletcher entered the Army in June 1972. In early assignments he served as an aviator and transportation officer. He has had overseas assignments in Korea, Germany and Southwest Asia.

Fletcher served at U.S. Transportation Command from July 1998 to July 2000. He assumed the role as the Army's Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4, last September.

In her next assignment, Dunwoody will serve as the Commanding General, U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command, Fort Lee, Va.

During the two years of her tenure, the command's focus was on the deployment and distribution of cargoes for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The massive movements of Department of Defense cargoes have been the greatest since World War II.

As an example, from Dec. 1, 2002-July 15, 2004, SDDC transporters conducted 527 vessel operations. Working at multiple ports and power projection platforms around-the-world, the command directed the movement of 70,000 containers and 50-million-square feet of cargo?enough to fill 1,036 football fields. The moves involved the equipment of eight of the Army's 10 divisions, several National Guard separate brigades and the Marines.

In another dramatic milestone, Dunwoody pursued the development of the "Families First" program for service members' personal property moves. Scheduled to begin in October 2005, the program will upgrade the 500,000 moves of service members conducted each year. New enhancements to the process include best value moves, full-value replacement of lost or damaged goods, and customer satisfaction surveys delivered via the Web.
