USTRANSCOM Commander visits DEAMS

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- The Defense Enterprise Accounting and Management System office welcomed Gen. Norton Schwartz Jan. 13 on his first official visit to DEAMS since assuming command of U.S. Transportation Command. DEAMS is jointly sponsored by USTRANSCOM, the Air Force and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. The General was accompanied during the visit by Mr. Alan K. Bentley, head of the program analysis and financial management directorate which has the administrative lead for DEAMS within the command. Also accompanying the general was Brig. Gen. Michael Basla, director of command, control, communications and computers for USTRANSCOM.

Welcoming Gen. Schwartz, DEAMS functional manager, Mr. John Senn, recognized both the support of the joint partners and the DEAMS team.

"We have a great partnership and the best people on board to make this happen," said Mr. Senn. "This a team of experts."

After a tour of the program office and orientation briefing on the current program, the general commented on the importance of DEAMS.

"DEAMS is one of those 'big ideas' that senior leaders need to know about and closely monitor," said Gen. Schwartz. "This is good government, properly delivered."

DEAMS was established in August 2003 as one of the initiatives under the Defense Department's Business Management Modernization Program, now the Business Transformation Agency. One major milestone was achieved in June 2005 when Oracle was selected to provide the commercial off-the-shelf software that DEAMS will use. The next milestone will be the selection of a systems integrator to oversee implementation of that software.

The first increment of DEAMS implementation, Version 1.1, a technology demonstration to be conducted at Scott AFB, will include USTRANSCOM, Air Mobility Command and Air Force tenants on the base. Version 1.2 will include the remainder of the USTRANSCOM components and Air Mobility Command bases.
