USTRANSCOM Navy Reservists welcome aboard new commander
SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - Capt. Mark L. Leavitt assumed command of the Navy Reserve Element of U. S. Transportation Command from Capt. Christopher A. Ryan in a ceremony here on Dec. 6.
"Serving as the Navy Reserve Element Commander," said Leavitt, "is a great honor. Having spent my career as a Naval aviator, this assignment is also a wonderful opportunity to broaden my understanding of the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard as we work together to support USTRANSCOM's mission to create and implement world-class global deployment and distribution solutions."
The ceremony, presided over by Air Force Reserve Maj. Gen. Harold L. Mitchell, commander of USTRANSCOM's Joint Transportation Reserve Unit (of which the Navy Reserve Element is a part), formalized Leavitt's acceptance - and Ryan's relinquishment - of command of the 45 Navy and Marine Corps Reserve personnel assigned to the JTRU.
The JTRU, the first Department of Defense-authorized "joint" reserve unit, provides USTRANSCOM with the skilled personnel it needs from the reserve components of all the services.
Leavitt is an assistant chief pilot for United Parcel Service in his civilian career, and lives in Louisville, Ky.
Ryan, a native of Alexandria, Va., leaves USTRANSCOM for his new assignment as Navy Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer, Federal Emergency Management Agency Region VI in Denton, Texas. Ryan is a pilot for American Airlines and lives in Southlake, Texas.
